The ‘Burning Questions’ project was an Arts Victoria, Artist In Schools collaboration between myself and Mordialloc Secondary College. It was a multi-discipline participatory art project exploring digital media as a vehicle for positive change.
Twenty students attended workshops in a makeshift ‘production studio’, where they planned and produced screen and sound works for an outdoor exhibition in the school courtyard. Their brief was to respond to ‘burning questions’ from the wider Mordialloc community that had been submitted to a hotline via sms.
Students were exposed to versatile media production skills enabling them to realise their artistic visions beyond traditional media forms. There was a focus on the use of web tools that offer creative commons licensed images, video and music. The resulting artistic outcome was a collection of sound and video projections that transformed the school landscape and shifted staff and student perceptions about art production and display.
