This worked was created for ElectrofringeOnline 2007:
Status 2.0
Micro-blogging in online social networking spaces is disproportionately fascinating. This is not a universal feeling, but reading short phrases that describe people’s immediate moods and thoughts can be a highly addictive activity - even the mundane stuff is compelling.
Status 2.0 is a comment on 'broadcast yourself' culture and the fervour with which people are embracing self-publishing online. The work specifically explores our fascination with the minutiae of people's lives via ‘status updates’ and ‘thumbcasts’ in social networking spaces.
It is also a comment on the re-purposing of personal data in what cultural commentators are beginning to call the 'Age of Extreme Transparency' – an era born through individuals choosing to make intimate information about themselves available through blogs and online social networks.
